The Next Link in the Chain of the Star Wars Legacy

To be honest, I have never played any Star Wars game that I really enjoyed thoroughly and of which I became a huge fan. On that same note, I have not seen any of the Star Wars movies in full… ever. While these two things have absolutely, without a doubt, nothing in common with each other, many would think that the two are connected. Okay fine, maybe they have something to do with each other in some weird way.

Anyway, as most of you know, Star Wars: The Old Republic is set to be released towards the end of 2011 and so far the game has stirred up quite a lot of buzz on the net. How do I know? Well, for one, SWTOR has just become the most preordered game in EA’s history in only five days. Second, see the image above. With all of the hype, the question is not whether or not users will play the games, as obviously they have plans to, but whether the game will pay off. Bioware has already stated that they have passed the 300 million dollar price tag which is more than any game ever, and right now the trend in PC gaming has moved from charging high amounts to giving them away, literally. We have seen huge titles such as WOW, and Team Fortress II, take up the idea and other games seem to be quickly following. If this trend continues, will the new release have enough steam to make back all the money spent?

Probably. Well, it’s just a guess, but I imagine they will. I digress. While I have not ever been a huge Star Wars fan, I have played many of the games in the past and not ever really gotten into any of them. My hope is that this game will be able to get me excited about what’s happening in the game and not so much how closely it resembles the collection of movies.  It will be interesting to see what kind of spins or tricks they will put into the game to make it stand out from the original games. One thing that the creators are stating will separate this game from all the others is the voiceovers. Jake Neri, Producer at LucasArts, stated that what has made Star Wars, as an idea, survive for over thirty years is the rich storylines of the characters within. With this idea in mind, the game developers and creators think that it is absolutely critical to include voiceovers for all of the characters within the game.

According to the Star Wars the Old Republic website (found here: http://www.swtor.com/) there are “several thousand speaking roles and hundreds of thousands of recorded lines of dialogue.” If this doesn’t separate this game from all of the other pre-releases, then I am not sure what will. While I may want to see the game stand alone, independent of the films and the other games, it may not be what everyone else wants. So, tell me. What do you hope to see? Did you like the previous releases? Does this game look like something you could get lost in and play for hours on end? Be sure to let me know in the comment section or you can email me. May the force be with you!
